Anxiety, Mind Racing and Pain are Largest Culprits for the Sleep Deprived; Only 25 Percent Would Be Willing to Use Prescription Sleep Aid

LOS ANGELES, June 3, 2013 — Eighty three percent of Americans say they do not always get a good night’s sleep on a regular basis, according to the 2013 Rx Sleep Survey conducted by Harris Interactive on behalf of Targeted Medical Pharma, Inc. (OTCQB: TRGM), a Los Angeles-based biotechnology company.

The results also revealed that while only 25 percent of Americans would be willing to take a prescription sleep aid to improve sleep quality, the majority of Americans (71 percent) would rather use other means to get a good night’s rest. Slightly more than half of those Americans who said they would take a prescription sleep aid only would do so if the ingredients were recognized as safe as defined by the FDA.

“Most Americans who have trouble sleeping would rather not take prescription drugs because of the adverse side effects,” said Dr. Fred McCall-Perez, Ph.D., Vice President of Medical Affairs at Targeted Medical Pharma, who will be presenting the survey results in conjunction with clinical data comparing the medical food Sentra PM® and a commonly prescribed sleep drug for the management of sleep disorders associated with depression, June 5 at SLEEP 2013 in Baltimore, MD (Abstract: 0663; Poster: 144). “Clinical data show our amino acid-based oral medication, Sentra PM improved the quality of sleep with no adverse side effects because it is formulated using ingredients that are Generally Recognized as Safe by the FDA.”

Click here or visit http://youtu.be/NfGHCBLhqrc to view a video of Dr. Fred McCall-Perez discussing sleep trends and prescription alternatives to pharmaceutical drugs.

Women Are More Affected

More women (88 percent) than men (78 percent) suffer from lack of sleep or sleep disorders, according to the survey, with 56 percent of women saying anxiety and stress are the leading reasons for lack of restful sleep, compared to only 40 percent of men.

Forty-eight percent of Americans say stress and anxiety prevent them from getting a good night’s sleep on a regular basis. Other top reasons Americans do not always get a good night’s sleep include:

• Inability to turn off thoughts (47 percent): Women (51 percent); Men (43 percent)
• Pain (38 percent): Women (40 percent); Men (35 percent)
• Being overtired (32 percent): Women (36 percent); Men (28 percent)
• Background noise (23 percent): Women (27 percent); Men (20 percent)
• Children or pets (23 percent): Women (27 percent); Men (18 percent)

Difficulty breathing (18 percent) and spouses or significant others (17 percent) rounded out the list of reasons Americans cited for not getting a good night’s sleep on a regular basis.
The survey also found that people with household incomes of more than $100K annually (41 percent) were less inclined to say stress or anxiety were reasons for not getting good sleep, compared to those individuals with household incomes of less than $35K annually (55 percent). The same disparity went for pain. Only 31 percent of America’s high earners said pain was a reason for not sleeping, compared to 45 percent of those making the lowest wages.

Despite differences between the two income groups, there were some similarities when it comes to reasons for not getting a good night’s sleep. The survey revealed that the inability to turn off thoughts and children or pets affected sleep the same regardless of income (48 percent and 24 percent, respectively).

The survey also discovered that 96 percent of the sleep-deprived are not taking prescription sleep aids to improve the quality of their slumber. More women (29 percent) than men (20 percent) would be willing to take a prescription sleep aid. The survey also found that women (68 percent) are less inclined than men (75 percent) to use other means than prescription sleep aids to help them sleep.

“It’s interesting to see the dichotomy between men and women when it comes to getting a good night’s sleep,” added Dr. McCall-Perez. “Women appear to be more stressed, more anxious, more tired, and more open than men to using a prescription sleep aid.”

About the Rx Sleep Survey

The TRGM Sleep Survey was conducted by telephone within the United States by Harris Interactive between April 25-28, 2013 among 1,008 U.S. adults 18 years of age and older. Results were weighted for age, sex, geographic region, and race when necessary to align them with their actual proportions in the population.

Los Angeles, CA, May 31, 2013 — David Silver, M.D., President and Chief Operating Officer at Targeted Medical Pharma, Inc. (OTCQB: TRGM), a biotechnology company that develops and distributes prescription medical foods, issued the following statement regarding a University of Michigan study highlighted in Pain Medicine News demonstrating the connection between μ-opioid receptor binding and the brain’s response to fibromyalgia pain:

“The University of Michigan study confirms widespread consensus within the medical community that fibromyalgia patients respond poorly to narcotics. Additionally, there is no medical evidence showing narcotics actually work to treat the chronic pain of fibromyalgia. As pointed out by one of the study researchers, opioid receptors do not work properly among fibromyalgia patients, and as a result, these receptors have no binding effect when introduced to narcotics causing no parasympathetic function to occur.

“Many people with fibromyalgia, however, turn to non-pharmaceutical alternatives such as medical foods, which treat the nutritional deficiencies in chronic disease. As a practicing board-certified rheumatologist and internist, I have prescribed these medications to patients for the treatment of fibromyalgia. Patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia may have an increased need for precursors of the neurotransmitters nitric oxide, GABA (gamma-amino butyric acid), serotonin, and acetylcholine. These include amino acids and nutrients such as arginine, glutamate, tryptophan, acetyl-L-carnitine, and choline.

“Each medical food used in the dietary management of fibromyalgia contains the specific elements the body requires to stimulate the neurotransmitters that support the activities mediated by the autonomic nervous system. The result is a more efficacious treatment for fibromyalgia patients with little or no side effects since their ingredients are Generally Recognized as Safe by the FDA.”

About Dr. David Silver

Dr. Silver has conducted more than 100 clinical trials and is a national expert on pain, fibromyalgia and rheumatologic diseases. He is a practicing board-certified rheumatologist and internist, and served as clinical chief of rheumatology and director of the chronic pain rehabilitation program at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. Dr. Silver remains active in academia as an associate clinical professor of medicine at UCLA. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in medical sciences with a minor in economics from Boston University. After earning a medical degree from Boston University’s School of Medicine, he completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Northwestern University’s School of Medicine, with a fellowship in Rheumatology at Cedars Sinai Medical Center.

– Company Reports Record Revenue through Continued Execution of Growth Plan –

Los Angeles, May 15, 2013 — Targeted Medical Pharma, Inc. (OTCQB: TRGM), a biotechnology company that develops and distributes prescription medical foods, convenience kits and generic pharmaceuticals to physicians and pharmacies, today announced financial results for its first quarter ended March 31, 2013. The Company posted record quarterly revenue of $2.811 million for the first quarter ended March 31, 2013, compared to revenue of $1.375 million for the first quarter ended March 31, 2012, an increase of 104.4 percent.

“I am thrilled to report the Company’s strongest recorded quarterly revenue as we continue to execute on our growth strategy,” commented William Shell, M.D., Chief Executive Officer and Chief Science Officer of Targeted Medical Pharma. “The expansion and application of current initiatives, and our ability to enter new markets, has resulted in increased revenue for all of our business lines, and helped us generate our fifth consecutive quarter of revenue growth. The actual growth in revenue was over one-hundred percent in the first quarter of 2013, compared to the first quarter of 2012, and we were cash flow positive from operations as well. I am optimistic about our growth and the team we have in place as we continue to strengthen our product pipeline and expand our sales and marketing efforts, while at the same time contain our operating expenses as we work to expand market share and enter new markets. I am also very encouraged with the expansion of our product line to support the needs of our customers.”

Financial Overview:
Revenues for the three months ended March 31, 2013 were $2.811 million, compared to $1.375 million for the three months ended March 31, 2012, an increase of $1.436 million, or 104.4 percent. The increase in revenue was primarily attributed to a significant increase in prescriptions among workers compensation and commercial providers, along with improved collection rates for new and aged receivables.

Gross profit for the three months ended March 31, 2013 was $1.912 million, compared to $0.740 million for the three months ended March 31, 2012, an increase of $1.172 million, or 158.3 percent. The increase in gross profit was attributed to increased revenues resulting from a significant increase in collections and to a lesser extent payments associated with the Cambridge contract.

The net loss for the three months ended March 31, 2013 was $0.270 million and the diluted loss per share was $0.01, compared to a net loss of $0.976 million and diluted loss per share of $0.04 for the same period in 2012. The decrease in net loss was attributed to higher revenue combined with modest growth in operating expenses.

As of March 31, 2013 the Company had $34.6 million of unrecognized accounts receivables, not on the balance sheet due to our policy of not recognizing revenue for delivered product with a long collection cycle, until the cash is received. This unrecognized asset has the potential to become revenue in the future as the Company’s billing and collection subsidiary continues to collect accounts receivable on behalf of physicians using the Company’s managed business model and hybrid business model, for patient claims.

Adjusted EBITDA, a non-GAAP measure set forth in the table below, was negative $117 thousand for the three month period ended March 31, 2013, compared to negative $1.284 million for the three month period ended March 31, 2012, which is a reduction of $1.167 million or 91 percent.

Statements made in this release include a non-GAAP financial measure. The non-GAAP measure is included to provide management, our investors and prospective investors with an alternative method for assessing our operating results in a manner that is focused on the performance of our ongoing operations and to provide a more consistent basis for comparison between quarters. The non-GAAP financial measure presented is Adjusted EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, amortization, derivative revaluation, stock option compensation expense and stock issued for services). This term might not be calculated in the same manner as, and thus might not be comparable to, similarly titled measures reported by other companies. The financial statement tables that accompany this press release include reconciliation of the non-GAAP financial measure to the most directly comparable GAAP financial measure.

–Company to Focus on Marketing/Sales; Expanding Product Pipeline in 2013–

Los Angeles, CA April 1, 2013, Targeted Medical Pharma, Inc. (OTCQB: TRGM), a biotechnology company that develops and distributes prescription medical foods, convenience kits and generic pharmaceuticals to physicians and pharmacies, today filed its 10-K and announced the Company’s 2012 financial results.

“We are pleased to report that the second half of 2012 has come back strong and clearly reflects the traction we are seeing as we continue to gain momentum,” said Chief Executive and Chief Scientific Officer William Shell, M.D. “Revenue decreased in the first half of 2012 primarily due to concerns among physicians regarding the changes in legislation that could have impacted payments to physicians who dispense pharmaceuticals. Fortunately, the final bill did not impact the sale of medical foods or medical food convenience kits. When physicians understood this in the second half of 2012, the Company saw an acceleration of growth.”

Dr. Shell continued, “A second bill passed accelerating payment of old workers compensation claims. As our Company recognized revenue for workers compensation claims only upon collection, this benefits our Company twofold – both through improved cash flow and increased revenue. In July, the acceleration of both dispenses and collections of workers compensation claims were seen due to the legislation that ultimately passed. Another consequence of this legislation has been the near elimination of the compounded pain medication marketplace. The impact on the compounded medication marketplace, which is a competitor for medical foods in some cases, has also positively increased medical food dispensing and revenue, particularly the Company’s product Theramine®. The Company continues to show a narrowing of its net operating loss and improvement of its EBIDTA based on the preliminary unaudited analysis of its 2013 first quarter performance.”

As of December 31, 2012 the Company had a $34.4 million off balance sheet asset due to unrecorded accounts receivable for delivered products. This unrecognized off balance sheet asset has the potential to be recorded as revenue in the future as the Company’s CCPI subsidiary collects receivables on behalf of the Company’s Physician Managed business model and Hybrid business model customers’ claims.

Dr. Shell, M.D. continued, “Our strategic focus over the past year has been to expand distribution channels and enhance reimbursement mix, increase cash collections, and further develop our pipeline of proprietary prescription-only medical foods. I am pleased to report that we have made solid progress against each of these initiatives, as the Company transitions from development stage into a growing business with excellent long-term potential.”

“On the corporate front, we welcomed Kerry Weems to our board of directors. Mr. Weems is a nationally respected expert in health policy and government finance, who most recently was Acting Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and Vice-Chairman of the American Health Information Community,” said Dr. Shell. “We also announced the appointment of Fred McCall-Perez, Ph.D. as our new director of medical affairs.
